Understanding Endpoint Synchronization

Prev Next

Introduction

Endpoint synchronization is a key feature of HP WXP Collaboration. It automatically imports and refreshes device records from source systems such as Cisco Control Hub/Webex, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), and Poly RealPresence Resource Manager (RPRM). This approach streamlines and simplifies endpoint management by enabling administrators to manage all the endpoints in one central location and reduces the need for manual data entry. Endpoint synchronization allows for the synchronization and monitoring of critical data, including serial numbers, IP addresses, Directory Number/Aliases, and Mac Addresses, which helps improve real-time monitoring and call correlation

This article explains how endpoint synchronization works in WXP Collaboration and why it is better than manual entry.

Key Features

Some of the key features include:

  1. Zero-touch endpoint administration

WXP Collaboration uses vendor APIs to retrieve a list of registered or managed devices and syncs them daily. Synchronization supports zero-touch endpoint monitoring. New devices that are added to a source system appear in the Tech Insights Suite the following day without the need for manual input.

We recommend using synchronization instead of manually adding endpoints. Manually added endpoints must be manually maintained - these may not be updated even if subsequently learned and may result in duplicated endpoints.

  2. Daily synchronization

WXP Collaboration synchronizes endpoint details on a daily basis. For example, if an endpoint IP address changes, the new value appears in the Tech Insights Suite after nightly processing.

  3. Endpoint deletion or decommission

Delete an endpoint in the source system to decommission it from WXP Collaboration Endpoint dataset. Some systems may require extra steps. For example, in Cisco TelePresence Management Suite (TMS), deleting a device alone may not be enough. In such cases, you may need to purge the system so that changes are reflected in WXP Collaboration application.

Do not delete synchronized endpoints manually in WXP Collaboration application. They will reappear after the next daily sync.

  4. Identify the source of truth

WXP Collaboration enables IT administrators to identify where each endpoint was synchronized from.

    1. In the Admin Portal of WXP Collaboration application, go to the endpoints list.

    2. Select the Show ExternalId checkbox to add a column that shows the source system.

    3. The beginning of the ExternalId column indicates the source. Refer to the screenshot above for examples:

      1. zoomRoomId: The endpoint was synchronized from Zoom.

      2. sparkId:  The endpoint was synchronized from Cisco Webex/Control Hub (Spark was an earlier name for Webex).

      3. mstr: The endpoint is a Microsoft Teams Room synchronized from Microsoft Teams.

      4. cucmId: The endpoint was synchronized from Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM).

An External ID indicates that the endpoint was added manually in the Admin Portal. If External ID starts with custom: the endpoint was created by importing a CSV file into WXP Collaboration.
