Introduction
HP Workforce Experience Platform (WXP) supports pre-installation notifications for driver updates to help reduce unexpected interruptions. End users receive a Windows notification an hour before a scheduled driver update is installed. This notification gives users time to save their work, plan for the installation, or start the update immediately.
Understanding the Notification Workflow
WXP determines that a driver update is ready to install based on the applicable driver update policy assignment.
One hour before the scheduled installation, Windows displays a popup notification to the end user.
The end user clicks Update Now to install the driver update immediately.
If the end user dismisses the notification or takes no action, the driver update installs automatically after 60 minutes.
If a restart is required to complete the update, Windows displays the Restart Now prompt once. The user can dismiss the prompt and restart the device later.
IT Admins: Enabling Notifications
IT admins must opt in to pre-installation notifications for driver updates by completing the notification setup at the top of the Policies page.
Log in to WXP. The Home page is displayed.
From the left menu of WXP, click Remediations > Policies. The Policies page is displayed, showing existing policies.
On the banner Enable pre-installation notifications?, click Enable. An Enable pre-installation notifications dialog box is displayed.
On the Enable pre-installation notifications dialog box, click Next.
After an IT admin enables this feature, notifications apply to all existing and future driver update policy assignments.
End Users: Responding to a Notification
When the notification appears, end users should save their work and decide whether to start the update immediately or allow it to run automatically after the 60-minute countdown. This advance notice helps prevent driver updates from starting unexpectedly during active work or meetings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can notifications be configured by driver, policy, or assignment?
Notifications currently apply to all assignments for all driver update policies. Future releases will provide options to enable or disable notifications at a more granular level.
Can the update be delayed for longer than 60 minutes?
The current experience provides a 60-minute notification window before the update installs automatically. This release addresses the most disruptive scenario: driver updates that start without warning during active work or meetings. More configurable notification and scheduling options are planned for future releases.
What about BIOS policy notifications?
For BIOS policy updates that require a restart, the end user receives a notification that a restart is required. The user can dismiss the notification or select Restart now to restart immediately. Users who dismiss the notification can restart the device later by using the standard Windows restart options.
