Introduction
The Pre-installation notification feature in HP Workforce Experience Platform (WXP) for driver updates helps reduce unexpected interruptions by alerting end-users before a scheduled driver update begins. With this feature, end-users receive a Windows notification an hour before the update installs. This notification gives them time to save their work, plan around meetings, or start the update immediately.
Understanding the Notification Workflow
WXP identifies a driver update that is ready to install based on the applicable driver update policy assignment.
An hour before installation, Windows displays a pop-up notification to the end-user.
The end-user can select Update Now to start the driver update immediately.
If the end-user does not take any action or dismisses the notification, the driver update installs automatically after 60 minutes.
If a restart is required to complete the update, Windows displays the Restart Now prompt once. The end-user can dismiss the prompt and restart later.
End-user experience
When the notification appears, end-users should save their work and decide whether to start the update immediately or allow it to run automatically after the 60-minute countdown. This advance notice is intended to reduce situations in which driver updates start unexpectedly during active work or meetings.
IT Admin experience
IT admins must opt in to pre-installation notifications for driver updates by following the enablement flow at the top of the Policies page. After enabling the notifications, they apply to all existing and future driver update policy assignments.
Enabling Pre-installation Notiification
Log in to WXP. The Home page is displayed.
From the left menu of WXP, click Remediation > Policies. The Policies page is displayed.
On the Policies page, click Enable. The Enable pre-installation notifications dialog box is displayed.
In the Enable pre-installation notifications dialog box, click Next.
Click Enable.
Once enabled, the Enable option is removed from the Policies page.
Frequently asked questions
1. Can notifications be configured by driver, policy, or assignment?
Currently, notifications apply to all assignments for all driver update policies. Upcoming releases will add the ability to enable or disable notifications at a more granular level.
2. Can the update be delayed for longer than 60 minutes?
The initial experience provides a 60-minute notification window before the update installs automatically. This release is designed to address the most disruptive scenario: driver updates that start without warning during active work or meetings. More configurable notification and scheduling options are planned for future releases.
3. What about BIOS policy notifications?
For BIOS policy updates that require a reboot, the end-user receives a notification indicating that a restart is required. The end-user can dismiss the notification or select Restart now to restart immediately. Users who dismiss the notification can choose when to reboot by using the standard Windows restart experience.
