Uninstalling HP Services Scan

Prev Next

Introduction

The Services Scan feature in HP Workforce Experience Platform (WXP) is a virtual driver installed on HP devices through Windows Update during the initial boot process. Its primary purpose is to check whether a PC is entitled to services such as HP Premium or Premium+ and, if eligible, install the WXP Insights agent.

You can disable or remove HP Services Scan using one of the methods described below. These methods help streamline driver maintenance and device management.

Note: If your business does not have an IT team that manages your devices, use Option 1 or Option 2. Option 3 requires IT administration.

Option 1: Disabling HP Services Scan Without Removing It

This option includes two methods:

  • Method 1: For businesses that can directly update each PC.

  • Method 2: For businesses that cannot directly update each PC in their fleet.

Method 1: Disabling HP Services Scan Directly on Each PC

If you can directly update each PC, follow these steps to disable HP Services Scan. These steps prevent HP Services Scan from contacting HP servers and triggering future installations of the WXP Insights application.

  1. Sign in to each PC with an account that has administrator rights.

  2. In Windows Search, enter Command Prompt. When the application is displayed, select Run as administrator.

  3. When the Command Prompt window opens, copy and paste the following command:

    reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\HP\HP Services Scan" /v ServicesScanControl /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
  4. Press Enter.

  5. To stop all telemetry data collected on the PC from being sent to HP servers, ensure that the WXP Insights application is uninstalled. In Windows Search, enter Installed Apps. When the application is displayed, select Run as administrator. Search for WXP Insights. If it is listed, use the uninstall option.

To re-enable HP Services Scan:

  1. Use Windows Search on each PC to find Registry Editor,

  2. select Run as administrator,

  3. Use Edit > Find to search for ServicesScanControl.

  4. Delete the registry key.

This restores the default behavior, including the automatic installation of WXP Insights if the PC is entitled to certain services, including HP Premium or Premium+.

Method 2: Disable HP Services Scan Across Multiple PCs

If you prefer to use a tool that can push a registry key to your fleet (instead of directly updating each PC), follow these steps.

  1. Use your fleet tool to add a registry key, or update it if one already exists, with the following attributes:

    • Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\HP

    • Name: ServicesScanControl

    • Data: Hexadecimal value of 1

  2. To stop all telemetry data collected on the fleet of PCs from being sent to HP servers, use the same tool to uninstall the WXP Insights application on each PC.

Note: To re-enable HP Services Scan, use the same tool to delete the registry key. This restores the default behavior, including the automatic installation of WXP Insights if the PC is entitled to certain services, including HP Premium or Premium+.

Option 2: Remove HP Services Scan

Use one of the following methods to remove HP Services Scan:

  • Method 1: Remove HP Services Scan Using PnPUtil

  • Method 2: Remove HP Services Scan Using a PowerShell Script

Method 1: Remove HP Services Scan Using PnPUtil

Use PnPUtil to identify and remove the HP Services Scan component and extension drivers.

To remove the component drivers:

  1. Run the following command:

pnputil /enum-drivers > out.txt
  1. Open out.txt and locate all entries with Original Name: hpsvcsscancomp.inf.

  2. Note the corresponding Published Name, for example, oem##.inf.

  3. For each identified driver, run:

pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall

Note: To remove the extension drivers, repeat steps 2–4 using Original Name: hpsvcsscanext.inf.

Method 2: Remove HP Services Scan Using a PowerShell Script

Use a PowerShell script to automatically remove the HP Services Scan component and extension drivers.

Download the uninstallation PowerShell script or create one manually using the steps below. When ready, run the script to remove the drivers.

echo "Removing component drivers..."(pnputil /enum-drivers | Out-String) -split '\r\n\r\n' | ? { $_ -match 'hpsvcsscancomp.inf' } | % { if ($_ -match "oem(?<oem>\d+?)\.inf") { $oem_number = $matches["oem"] echo "Removing oem${oem_number}.inf:" pnputil /delete-driver "oem${oem_number}.inf" /uninstall Start-Sleep -Seconds 5 } else { echo "Couldn't get OEM number. Please remove manually." }}echo "Finished removing component drivers."echo "Removing extension drivers..."(pnputil /enum-drivers | Out-String) -split '\r\n\r\n' | ? { $_ -match 'hpsvcsscanext.inf' } | % { if ($_ -match "oem(?<oem>\d+?)\.inf") { $oem_number = $matches["oem"] echo "Removing oem${oem_number}.inf:" pnputil /delete-driver "oem${oem_number}.inf" /uninstall Start-Sleep -Seconds 5 } else { echo "Couldn't get OEM number. Please remove manually." }}echo "Driver removal complete."

Prevent HP Services Scan from Being Installed Again

Removing HP Services Scan does not prevent Windows Update from installing it again. For managed devices, use one of the following methods to prevent installation:

Method 1: Using Group Policy

Use Group Policy to prevent HP Services Scan from being installed on managed devices.

  1. On the Active Directory Domain Controller, open Group Policy Management.

Run gpmc.msc from the command prompt.

  2. Create a new Group Policy Object (GPO) or edit an existing one.

  3. Link the GPO to the relevant Organizational Unit (OU) that contains the target computers.

  4. Go to Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Device Installation Restrictions.

  5. Double-click Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs and set it to Enabled.

  6. Select Also apply to matching devices that are already installed.

  7. Click Show, and add the device ID SWC\HPTPSH000C

  1. Uninstall the HP Services Scan driver using one of the removal methods described earlier.

Method 2: Using Microsoft Intune

Use Microsoft Intune Settings Catalog to prevent HP Services Scan from being installed on managed devices.

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.

  2. Go to Devices > Configuration > Create > New policy. The Create a profile page is displayed.

  3. For Platform, select Windows 10 and later.

  4. For Profile type, select Settings catalog, and then click Create. The Profile configuration page is displayed.

  5. Under Configuration settings, click Add settings and search for Device Installation.

  6. Click Device Installation and add the following settings:

    • Set Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs to Enabled.

    • In the Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs list, add the device ID SWC\HPTPSH000C.

    • Set Also apply to matching devices that are already installed to Enabled.

  7. Click Next, assign the profile to the relevant device groups, and click Create.

  8. Devices apply this policy during the next Intune sync cycle. To apply the policy immediately, go to the device in Intune and select Sync.
