Configuring SFTP to Collect CUCM Call Records

Prev Next

Introduction

Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) can be configured to export Call Detail Records (CDR) to an external file location (instead of allowing direct access to monitoring tools). To achieve this, an external Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) server is used as an intermediary to store CDR files.

Note: HP does not recommend any specific SFTP solution. The example provided in this article is only for reference. The installation, maintenance, and connectivity of the SFTP server, including communication between CUCM and the SFTP server, are the responsibility of the customer. External SFTP servers are not part of the WXP Collaboration product and are not supported by WXP Support.

This article provides step-by-step guidance to configure an external or third-party SFTP server for collecting CUCM CDR records. HP WXP Collaboration application retrieves the CDR records from the SFTP location and uses them for call monitoring, reporting, and analytics.

Example SFTP Implementation Using freeFTPd

Step 1: Installing SFTP

  1. Download the freeFTPd installer from this link: http://www.freesshd.com/?ctt=download

  2. On the Setup dialog box, locate the downloaded installer and run it as an administrator.

  3. When prompted for the installation directory, select C:\Vyopta\SFTP and click Next.

  4. In the Select Components dropdown, ensure the default option Full Installation is selected.

  5. Accept the default folder name for Start Menu or provide a custom name.

  6. Select the checkbox Create a desktop icon.

  7. Review the installation settings and modify them if required.

  8. When prompted, click Yes to create private keys.

  9. Click Yes to allow freeFTPd to run as a service.

  10. Complete the installation.

Step 2: Configuring SFTP

  1. Go to start/run/type in services.msc and set to “Automatic” under Startup Type.

  2. Find freeftpd service, stop service if running and select “Disable” under Startup Type.

  3. On the Task menu, find freeFTPd and run it as an administrator.

  4. Ensure that both FTP Server Status and SFTP Server Status are Offline.

  5. On the freeFTPd Settings dialog box, expand the SFTP section and configure SFTP server general options:

    1. Listen Address: 0.0.0.0 (All interfaces)

    2. Port: 22

    3. SFTP Root Directory: C:\Vyopta\SFTP

  6. Click Apply and Save.

  7. On the freeFTPd Settings dialog box, expand the Users section to add a new user.

  8. Set the following User Properties:

    1. Login: WXP Collaboration

    2. Authorization: From the dropdown select "Password stored as SHA1 hash"

    3. Password: Enter twice

    4. Home Directory: C:\Vyopta\SFTP

    5. User can Access: Select the checkbox for SFTP server and  Uncheck FTP Server.

  9. Select Apply.

  10. Select SFTP and click Start.

    1. Ensure that the server Status is “Running…”

To view the actual host IP address of the SFTP server:

  1. from the left menu, expand the SFTP section and review the Listen Address list.

  2. Record the actual address for the subsequent steps.

Note: Do Not change the address.

In the given example, actual host is 10.200.10.32. The IP of the server 127. 0.0.1 is the loop back address and 0.0.0.0 refers to all interfaces.

Step 3: Configure the Vyopta Data Collector

  1. Log in to the Admin Portal of WXP Collaboration using admin credentials.

  2. From the left menu of the Admin Portal, click Infrastructure.

  3. Disable the corresponding CUCM infrastructure that is configured.

  4. Select the CUCM you want to configure and click the edit option (pencil icon).

  5. Expand the CDR File Collection section.

  6. Select the checkbox Use External FTP.

  7. Fill in the settings based on the configuration of the SFTP server and File Path as set up previously when installing the FreeFTPd server.

    1. The External FTP Host is the IP address of the data collector server that is hosting the FreeFTPd service configured above.

  8. Click Save.

  9. Scroll to the top of the CUCM configuration page you are editing and enable the system.

Step 4: Verification

After completing the configuration, contact the Support team to confirm that CDR collection is active and that data is flowing correctly.
