Deploying via Active Directory GPO Using Single Installer (.exe)

Organizations that manage fleets of Windows devices need a reliable and scalable method to deploy monitoring and telemetry tools without manual intervention. Automating the installation of the WXP Insights Agent helps enroll devices consistently in HP Workforce Experience Platform (WXP), improves visibility into device performance, and reduces administrative effort.

This article provides guidance to deploy WXP Insights agent for Windows using Single Installer (.exe) and Microsoft Active Directory, the standard directory service used for Group Policy Objects. This deployment method is ideal to automatically install the agent by using a predefined task execution template provided by Group Policy, leveraging the bundled Windows executable files in Single Installer (.exe).

The deployment method uses an Install.CMD batch script to check if the WXP Insights agent is installed when devices start. The script runs Single Installer (.exe) from a network location. The agent is then copied from the network and installed automatically via Group Policy. When users sign in, their devices automatically enroll in WXP.

Note: Devices must be connected to the internet to enroll with WXP. Users must also have permission to install software; otherwise, the agent may not install correctly.

Downloading WXP Insights Agent for Windows using the Single Installer (.exe) Method

To download the WXP Insights agent for Windows:

  1. Download the agent from the Download WXP Insights Agent Software page.

  2. Click WXP Insights Windows Application. A list of WXP Insights agent versions is displayed.

  3. Click Download. Two types of installers are displayed: x86 Single Installer (.exe) and Arm64 Single Installer (.exe)

    1. Setup Installer:

      1. From the dropdown next to the downloadable version, select x86 Single Installer (.exe). A setup.exe file is downloaded. Use it for 32-Bit or 64-Bit platform.

      2. From the dropdown next to the downloadable version, select Arm64 Single Installer (.exe). A setuparm.exe file is downloaded. Use it for Arm64 platform.

Note: For WXP Insights Agent versions 5.26.114, the executable files for Intel and Arm devices are renamed to WXPInsights.exe and WXPInsights-arm.exe

Creating an Application in GPO

To create a Group Policy Object (GPO) for silent installation of the WXP Insights agent for Windows:

  1. Create an Install.CMD batch script file.

  2. On an AD Domain Controller, open a command prompt, and type gpmc.msc to open the AD Group Policy Management console.

  3. Right-click the domain name, and select Create a GPO in this Domain, and Link It Here.

  4. Name the Group Policy Object WXP Insights for Windows Application Auto Install from Step 3.

  5. Right-click the new GPO HP Insights for Windows Application Auto Install, and select Edit.

  6. Select Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts (Startup/Shutdown) > Startup.

  7. In the Startup Properties dialog box, select Show Files.

  8. Copy the Install.CMD batch file into the folder. A dialog box titled Startup Properties is displayed.

  9. In the Startup Properties dialog box, select Add, browse to the location, and select the Install.CMD file.

  10. Select OK to close the dialog box.

Devices will receive Group Policy Updates during the next refresh interval.

Note: When deploying WXPInsights.msi via Group Policy Object (GPO), ensure that client devices have administrative privileges.
