Introduction
HP Workforce Experience Platform (WXP) supports pre-installation notifications for driver updates to help reduce unexpected interruptions. When notifications are enabled for a driver update policy assignment, end users receive a Windows notification one hour before the update is installed. This gives users time to save their work, plan for the installation, or start the update immediately.
After enabling the feature, IT admins can turn pre-installation notifications On or Off for the groups selected during each assignment flow. The assignment toggle is On by default.
Note: This feature is available for all current and future driver update policies.
Prerequisites
The following requirements must be met:
An active WXP Pro or later plan
The IT Admin or Partner Admin role
Windows devices
WXP Insights Agent version 5.24.184 or later
Understanding the Notification Workflow
WXP identifies a driver update that is ready to install based on the applicable driver update policy assignment.
When pre-installation notifications are On for an assignment, Windows displays a notification one hour before the scheduled installation.

The end user can click Update Now to start the driver update immediately.
If the end user does not take any action or dismisses the notification, the driver update installs automatically after 60 minutes.
If a restart is required to complete the update, Windows displays the Restart Now prompt once. The end-user can dismiss the prompt and restart later.
IT Admins: Enabling Notifications
IT admins must opt in to pre-installation notifications for driver updates by following the enablement flow at the top of the Policies page.
Log in to WXP. The Home page is displayed.
From the left menu of WXP, click Remediations > Policies. The Policies page is displayed.
On the Enable pre-installation notifications? banner, click Enable and follow the enablement flow.

Note: Ensure that the devices have the minimum WXP Insights Agent versions listed in the dialog, especially if automatic agent updates are disabled. Devices with earlier versions might not apply driver update policies or display pre-installation notifications correctly.
In the Enable pre-installation notifications dialog box, click Next.

For additional information about updating the agent, see Managing Updates for WXP Insights Agent.
Click Enable. Existing driver update policies are automatically migrated to the new notification architecture. The migration cannot be undone and might take 1 to 2 minutes. Wait for confirmation that the migration is complete.

Note: Once enabled, the Enable option is removed from the Policies page.
IT Admins: Configuring Notifications for an Assignment
Start the group assignment flow for the driver update policy. Select the groups to assign.
Review the pre-installation notification toggle. The toggle is On by default. Leave it On to send pre-installation notifications to the selected groups, or turn it Off to prevent notifications from being sent.
Complete the assignment flow. The notification setting is saved with the assignment and remains unchanged after the page is refreshed or the admin navigates away.

The toggle applies only to the groups selected during the current assignment flow. It does not affect other assignments for the policy. To use different notification settings for different groups, assign the groups in separate flows.
IT Admins: Viewing or Changing an Assignment Setting
Open the driver update policy details. On the Assignments tab, review the notification setting for the assigned groups.
After an assignment is complete, its notification setting cannot be edited directly. To change the setting, unassign the affected groups. Then, repeat the assignment flow and select the required notification setting.
End Users: Responding to a Notification
When the notification appears, end users should save their work and decide whether to start the update immediately or allow it to install automatically after the 60-minute countdown. This advance notice helps prevent driver updates from starting unexpectedly during active work or meetings.
When pre-installation notifications are Off for an assignment, end users do not receive a pre-installation notification. The driver update remains governed by the assigned policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can notifications be configured by driver, policy, or assignment?
Pre-installation notifications are configured at the group-assignment level for driver update policies. The toggle applies only to the groups selected during the assignment flow. It does not affect every assignment for the policy. A separate setting for individual drivers is not available in this flow.
2. Can the update be delayed for longer than 60 minutes?
The notification provides a 60-minute window before the driver update installs automatically. Dismissing the notification does not extend this window. The assignment toggle does not change the countdown or provide a longer delay.
3. What about BIOS policy notifications?
The assignment toggle described in this article controls pre-installation notifications for driver update policies. For BIOS policy updates that require a restart, the end user receives a notification that a restart is required. The user can dismiss the notification or click Restart now to restart immediately. Users who dismiss the notification can restart the device later by using the standard Windows restart options.
4. Can I change notifications for groups that are already assigned?
Yes. Unassign the affected groups, and then assign them again with the notification setting turned On or Off. The saved setting cannot be changed directly.
5. What happens if Windows notifications are disabled on the end user’s device?
The update waits for one hour and then installs automatically in the background.
6. What happens if the device is offline, asleep, or has no signed-in user when the notification is scheduled to appear?
The policy attempts the update again after the device is back online.
