Introduction
WXP lets you create printer policies (that is, definitions of printer settings and features to enable) that you can use to enforce configuration standards for your printer fleet. You can create two kinds of printer policies:
Printer-specific policies, which you define for a single printer.
Printer group policies, which you define and then assign to a group of printers. The printers in that group inherit the settings defined in the policy.
WXP uses policies to periodically assess printers in your fleet and determine whether their settings and features conform to the assigned policies. If a printer setting does not match the policy setting, the printer is considered out of compliance.
Policies also let you define how WXP behaves when assessing a setting. For example, in certain settings, you can specify the level of security risk WXP assigns when the setting is non-compliant. You can also define whether WXP attempts to remediate the setting or only flags the setting so that administrators can manage the printer by other means, such as taking the printer offline or removing it from the fleet.

Prioritization of printer policies
WXP lets you assign multiple policies to a single group. In addition, it also lets you define settings for a single printer. As a result, policy conflicts can arise. A printer might inherit policy settings from several policies, each of which might define a different setting value for the same setting. In these cases, WXP needs to determine which value the printer should comply with.
To solve policy conflicts like these, WXP uses the following priority logic.
Any setting in a printer-specific policy takes precedence over all policies assigned to the group the printer is a member of.
If two policies with conflicting values are assigned to the same group, they are prioritized based on the order in which they appear on the Printer Policy Assignments screen. You can modify the list order to ensure that the desired policy is prioritized appropriately.
